The Wicomico County Department of Special Education's mission is to prepare each child from birth to 21 to contribute to their communities in meaningful and positive ways, by provided specially designed instruction, allowing for individual differences and learning styles and developing independence and self-worth. The Department of Special Education acknowledges and supports the rights of all students to receive a free appropriate public education (FAPE) that will enable them to develop their unique talents and abilities, thus preparing them to participate in and serve their community with dignity and pride. We offer a continuum of services to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
Recognizing special education is a journey with no true finish lines, just continuous opportunities to grow in a limitless future, the Wicomico County Public School System and Office of Special Education have embraced the concept of responsibility, independence and contribution in its delivery of specially designed instruction for students with disabilities. All decisions regarding placement of a child with a disability are made with the IEP team. The commitment to children and passion in making a difference, collaboratively, is evident in all aspects of our educational programs.
In fact, it is due to the integration of services, outreach to family and community and a strong belief that all students can learn, that our students have acquired the academic, vocational and social/emotional skills needed to transition to adulthood with conviction, self-confidence and competence. Information about the continuum and types of special education services are contained within the website. A written copy of the information on the website will be provided upon request of the director of special education.
